Many fighters sign their first professional contract on a phone screen during fight week. That is exactly when mistakes happen. This article explains, in plain language, the clauses that appear in most bout agreements and what questions to ask. It is general information, not legal advice. Laws differ between countries, and you should take independent advice before signing.
The core terms
| Clause | What it covers | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Parties | Who is contracting: you, the promoter, sometimes a manager | Is the promoter the legal entity running the event? |
| Bout details | Opponent, date, venue, discipline, ruleset, rounds | What happens if the opponent changes? |
| Weight | Contracted weight, weigh-in time, tolerance | What are the penalties for missing weight? |
| Purse | Fee, win bonus, when and how paid | Is any part conditional? Who pays tax? |
| Expenses | Travel, accommodation, corner team | How many corners are covered? |
| Medicals | Tests required, who pays | What if a test is delayed? |
| Cancellation | What you receive if the bout is cancelled | Are you paid if the opponent withdraws? |
| Exclusivity | Whether you can fight for others | For how long? How many bouts are guaranteed? |
| Image rights | Use of your name, image and footage | For how long and for what purposes? |
| Anti-doping and conduct | Rules you agree to follow | Which anti-doping rules apply? |
Red flags
- Long exclusivity with no guaranteed number of bouts.
- Purse payable only "after the event" with no date.
- Unlimited use of your image forever.
- Penalties for missing weight that exceed your purse.
- Pressure to sign immediately without reading.
- Any promise of ranking points or titles in exchange for money or signing. KBN ranking points can never be bought, and no promoter controls them.
Digital signing and verification
Where KBN's bout agreement module is enabled, promoters and athletes can sign agreements electronically, and each signed agreement has a verification link so either party can confirm it has not been altered. Keep your own copy of everything you sign.
Contracts and the KBN ranking
A contract does not affect ranking points. The ranking counts the verified official result of the bout, at the level KBN World HQ assigned to the event. A "title" named in a promotional contract is not automatically a KBN title, and the +75 title-defence bonus applies only when an administrator flags a successful KBN title defence.

Minors
Athletes under 18 cannot usually enter binding contracts alone, and many jurisdictions have specific protections. Parents and guardians should take advice.
Getting help
Ask an independent lawyer, your national federation or an athletes' association. A good promoter will not object to you taking advice.
A pre-signing checklist
- I know the exact opponent, date, venue, rules and rounds.
- I know the contracted weight, weigh-in time and tolerance.
- I know the purse, when it is paid and what deductions apply.
- I know what happens if the bout is cancelled.
- I understand any exclusivity and its length.
- I understand how my image and footage will be used.
- I have kept a signed copy.
- I have had independent advice where needed.
Myths and facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| A promotional title is a KBN title | Only a successful KBN title defence flagged by an administrator earns +75 |
| Contracts can include ranking guarantees | No one can guarantee or sell KBN points |
| Reading contracts is the manager's job | You are bound by what you sign; read it yourself |
| Digital signatures are not valid | Electronic signing is widely used; keep your copy and verification link |
Negotiation basics
- Know your worth: your verified record, ranking and profile help show your level.
- Ask for the key terms in writing before discussing details.
- Prioritise safety terms (medicals, weight, rest periods) as highly as money.
- Keep a record of all communications.
- Do not let deadlines pressure you into signing something you do not understand.
Frequently asked questions
QIs a verbal agreement enough?
It may be legally binding in some places but is hard to prove. Always get the key terms in writing.
QCan a promoter guarantee me a KBN ranking?
No. Rankings come only from verified bouts at events with a KBN level. No promoter can guarantee or sell points.
QWhat if I miss weight?
The contract sets the consequences, which may include a fine or cancellation. Agree a safe weight when negotiating, not in fight week.
QShould my coach sign for me?
Only if you have given them written authority, and you should still read the agreement yourself.
