How combat sports world rankings work: panels, points and verified records

Combat sports rankings are built in three main ways: panels of experts who vote, sanctioning bodies that publish their own lists, and points systems that calculate positions from results. KBN uses a published points formula applied only to verified bouts, so anyone can check why a fighter is where they are.

Tennis, golf and chess have long had calculated world rankings that everyone accepts. Combat sports have mostly relied on opinions, with lists that differ from one organisation to the next. Understanding the different approaches helps you read any ranking critically, including KBN's.

KBN uses a points system. The difference from many points systems is its evidence standard: only bouts verified against official evidence count, and every calculation can be traced.

The KBN formula in one line

Bout points = base points ร— event multiplier ร— time value, rounded to one decimal. A fighter's total is the sum of their verified bout points.

  • Base points: 5 for participation, +20 for a win, +5 for a KO or TKO win (and for a submission win in MMA only), +25/+50/+100 for tournament third/runner-up/champion, +75 for a successful KBN title defence.
  • Event multiplier: ร—1.0 National, ร—1.5 International Open, ร—2.0 Continental Championship, ร—2.5 KBN World Cup, ร—3.0 World Championship.
  • Time value: 100% for 12 months, 50% from 12 to 24 months, 0% after 24 months.

Divisions and scopes

A ranking only makes sense within a division. KBN keeps a separate table for every discipline (MMA, Kickboxing, Boxing, Muay Thai), category (professional, amateur), gender and weight class. Each table exists in three scopes: world, continental (by the fighter's country's continent) and national. Points never transfer between divisions.

Who appears

To appear in a published table a fighter must be licensed, have their ranking published by KBN World HQ, not be suspended, and have more than zero points. Applicants in review do not appear. That is why some well-known fighters may be missing: they have not applied, or their results have not yet been verified.

Why transparency matters

Every fighter profile shows the points breakdown bout by bout: event, level, result, base points, multiplier, time value and points. If you disagree with a position, you can see exactly which results produced it. Changes that affect points (a verification decision, a multiplier change, a licence status change) are logged in the audit trail.

Limits of any points system

A formula cannot see everything. It does not know that one opponent was injured or that a decision was controversial. KBN addresses some of this with event levels and reduced multipliers for events that did not meet standards, and with the Ranking Committee's authority to decide cases the rules do not cover. What it will not do is let opinion override the formula for individual fighters.

How to use rankings well

  • Read the division before the number: World No. 1 in which table?
  • Check the points gap, not only the position. A 2-point gap and a 200-point gap mean different things.
  • Look at when results expire. A leader with most points from 11 months ago may drop soon.
  • Check movement arrows, which compare with the table 30 days earlier.

Questions to ask of any ranking

A checklist for judging a ranking's credibility
QuestionKBN's answer
Is the method published?Yes: formula, levels, time value and tie-breaks are public
Is the data verified?Yes: only bouts verified against official evidence count
Can positions be bought? No: points come only from verified performance
Is there an audit trail?Yes: every state change is logged with before/after values
Can documents be checked?Yes: the verify page checks licences and certificates
Are divisions separate?Yes: discipline ร— category ร— gender ร— weight class

Why a calculated ranking can be trusted more than a list

A calculated ranking is reproducible: two people applying the same rules to the same verified results get the same table. That makes errors findable and manipulation visible. The trade-off is that the formula must be good and the data clean, which is why KBN invests so heavily in verification.

Frequently asked questions

QIs the KBN ranking decided by votes?
A

No. It is calculated by a published formula from verified bouts only. The Ranking Committee decides event levels and cases the rules do not cover, not individual positions.

QHow often is the ranking updated?
A

Continuously. Every verified result, multiplier change or licence change recalculates the affected tables immediately.

QWhy is a famous fighter not in the KBN ranking?
A

Only licensed fighters whose rankings are published appear. A fighter must apply and have results verified first.

QCan a fighter be ranked in more than one table?
A

Yes, if they have verified bouts in more than one division, each table counts only the bouts in that division.
