Boxing and kickboxing share a gym, a ring and a lot of vocabulary. But ask any boxer who has tried a kickboxing bout, or the reverse, and they will tell you the sports feel completely different. Here are the eight differences that matter most.
1. Weapons
Boxing allows only punches, only with the knuckle part of the closed glove, and only to legal targets above the belt. Kickboxing adds kicks and, in many rulesets, knees. That means threats come from further away and from more angles.
2. Stance
Boxers often stand more side-on, with weight forward, to maximise reach and protect the body with the elbows. Kickboxers usually stand more square with a lighter lead leg, ready to check low kicks and throw kicks from both sides. A boxing stance in a kickboxing bout invites low kicks to the lead leg.
3. Distance
Kickboxing adds an outer range where only kicks can land. Boxers do most of their work in the middle and inside ranges. Managing three ranges instead of two is a big tactical change.
4. Defence
Boxing defence relies heavily on head movement: slipping, rolling and ducking. In kickboxing, ducking low can walk your head into a knee or a high kick, so defence relies more on blocking, parrying, checking kicks and footwork.
5. Footwork
Boxers move on the balls of their feet with constant small adjustments. Kickboxers need a stance they can kick from and defend kicks from, so footwork is often more measured.
6. Clinch
Boxing referees separate clinches, and holding is a foul. In kickboxing the rules vary: some rulesets allow a brief clinch with a knee, others break immediately. Muay Thai, a separate discipline, makes the clinch central.
7. Scoring
Both sports use the 10-point must system in most events. Boxing judges look for clean, effective punches, defence and ring generalship. Kickboxing judges also score kicks and knees, and a hard kick that visibly affects the opponent can outweigh several light punches.
8. Conditioning
Kicking uses large muscle groups and makes bouts more tiring in a different way. Boxers moving to kickboxing often find their legs tire first, and kickboxers moving to boxing find the constant upper-body work demanding.
How KBN ranks each sport
| Boxing | Kickboxing | |
|---|---|---|
| Participation | 5 | 5 |
| Win | +20 | +20 |
| KO / TKO win | +5 | +5 |
| Submission bonus | Never (MMA only) | Never (MMA only) |
| Placement bonuses | +25 / +50 / +100 | +25 / +50 / +100 |
| Tables | Boxing only | Kickboxing only |
The event multiplier and time value apply equally. What never happens is transfer: a boxing bout never counts in a kickboxing table and the reverse. A bout's discipline comes from the event's official ruleset.
Which is right for you?
Choose boxing if you love hand skills, head movement and the sport's long tradition. Choose kickboxing if you want to use your whole body and enjoy varied, faster-paced exchanges. Many athletes train both; the best compete in one at a time with a camp built for that ruleset.
Making the switch: a four-week focus list
- Boxer to kickboxer: stance adjustments, checking low kicks, defending body kicks, adding a teep and round kick to your jab.
- Kickboxer to boxer: head movement, tighter guard, footwork on the balls of the feet, body punching, working at close range without clinching.
Rankings when you switch
A boxer's first kickboxing bout starts their kickboxing ranking. Their boxing results remain in the boxing tables until they expire. If they later return to boxing, those boxing results still count within the 24-month window.
Myths and facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Kickboxing is boxing with kicks added | Stance, defence, distance and scoring all change |
| Boxers cannot adapt to kickboxing | Many do, with specific work on kick defence and stance |
| The two sports share a ranking | KBN ranks them separately |
| Knockouts are worth more in boxing | A KO or TKO win earns the same 30 base points in both |
A KO win by event level (both sports)
Frequently asked questions
QIs boxing experience useful in kickboxing?
Very. Good hands are a huge advantage in kickboxing, but you must add kick defence and adjust your stance.
QDo boxing and kickboxing results combine in a KBN ranking?
No. Each discipline has its own tables and points never transfer.
QWhich sport has more knockouts?
It depends heavily on the level, ruleset and weight class. KBN records each finish as KO or TKO and shows the count on the fighter's verified record.
QAre the weight classes the same?
KBN uses sample weight-class tables for men and women across disciplines until its Annex A is published. Always check the class limits on the rankings page.
