How ranking points expire: the 12-month and 24-month rules with real dates

KBN ranking points expire in two steps: a result keeps 100% of its value for 12 months, drops to 50% after 12 months and to 0% after 24 months. The age is measured in days divided by 30.4375, so full value lasts about 365 days and half value until about day 730.

Ranking points are not permanent. At KBN, every result has a time value that falls as the result ages. This is why tables move even in weeks without a single fight, and why an inactive champion slowly slides down. This article gives the exact rule and works through real dates.

The rule

Time value
Age of resultTime value
Up to and including 12 months100%
More than 12 months, up to and including 24 months50%
More than 24 months0%
Age in months = days between the event date and the as-of date ÷ 30.4375.

Bout points = base points × event multiplier × time value, rounded to one decimal.

Why 30.4375?

30.4375 is the average length of a month over a four-year cycle (365.25 ÷ 12). Using it means the rule behaves the same in every month and every year, including leap years, instead of depending on whether a month has 28 or 31 days.

The boundaries in days

  • 12 months = 365.25 days. A result 365 days old is 11.99 months old: 100%. At 366 days it is 12.02 months old: 50%.
  • 24 months = 730.5 days. At 730 days a result is 23.98 months old: 50%. At 731 days it is 24.02 months old: 0%.

So, in practice, a result keeps full value for 365 days, half value from day 366 to day 730, and scores nothing from day 731.

Worked example with dates

Take a KO win at a KBN World Cup on 20 March 2026 (base 30, multiplier ×2.5 = 75 points at full value).

The same result as it ages
As-of dateDays since eventMonthsTime valuePoints
1 October 20261956.41100%75
20 March 202736511.99100%75

19 March 202873023.9850%37.5
20 March 202873124.020%0
2028 is a leap year, which is exactly why the rule counts days rather than calendar months.

Why expiry exists

A ranking should reflect current, verified form. Without expiry, an athlete who won a world title five years ago and never fought again would sit above active contenders. The 50% step softens the drop so a strong result does not vanish overnight at 12 months.

The rule also rewards activity at the right level. A decision loss at a World Cup (5 × 2.5 = 12.5) today can be worth more than an old win that has moved into the 50% band.

What expiry does not do

  • It does not delete results. Every verified result stays on the athlete's record, including the W-L-D count and KO/TKO count.
  • It does not affect licences. Licence validity is a separate one-year cycle.
  • It does not treat anyone differently. The rule applies automatically to every bout in every table.

Planning around expiry

  • Look at your points breakdown on your profile: it shows each bout's time value.
  • Note when your biggest results cross 12 and 24 months. Those are the dates your total will drop.
  • Plan bouts so new verified results arrive before big ones halve.
  • Submit new results quickly after each event; verification takes time.

The founding period

For 90 days from the official publication date, KBN accepts verified results from the preceding 24 months. Older results are recorded but score zero, exactly as the time-value rule says.

Seeing expiry on a profile

Every fighter profile shows the points breakdown with each bout's time value, and a 12-month points chart built from the nightly snapshots. The demo's World No. 1 in Professional Men's Kickboxing Welterweight, Aleksei Karimov, shows all three bands: his 2025 World Championship final at 100% (390 points), his 2025 Asian Championship final at 50% (55 points) and a July 2024 bout at 0%.

Frequently asked questions

QWhen exactly does a result drop to half value?
A

When it is more than 12 months old, measured as days ÷ 30.4375. In practice that is from day 366 after the event.

QDo expired results still count in my record?
A

Yes. They stay in your verified W-L-D record permanently; they just contribute 0 points.

QWhy did my points drop when I did not fight?
A

One of your results crossed the 12-month or 24-month line. Rankings are recalculated continuously, so ageing results change totals every day.

QIs the time value the same in every discipline?
A

Yes. It applies identically to MMA, kickboxing, boxing and Muay Thai, amateur and professional.
