How to climb the kickboxing rankings: an honest strategy guide

You climb the KBN rankings by adding verified results at higher-level events, staying active so new results replace ageing ones, and finishing fights where you safely can. There are no shortcuts: points cannot be bought, and every result must be verified.

Because the KBN formula is public, a fighter and coach can plan a season around it. That is not gaming the system; it is exactly what a transparent ranking is meant to encourage: more competitive fights at better events, fought more often. Here is what the numbers reward.

1. Event level matters more than anything else

The multiplier runs from ร—1.0 to ร—3.0. A decision win at a World Championship (75 points) is worth three times a decision win at a national event (25). Even a loss at a KBN World Cup (12.5) is worth half a national win.

Where a season's points come from (illustrative)
Season planBoutsPoints (full time value)
Four national decision wins4 ร— 25 ร— 1.0100
Two International Open decision wins2 ร— 25 ร— 1.575
One continental KO win and one continental loss30 ร— 2.0 + 5 ร— 2.070
Continental runner-up (win, win, lost final)25 ร— 2 + 25 ร— 2 + 55 ร— 2210
Illustrative arithmetic only. Runner-up: two decision wins (50 each) plus the lost final with the +50 placement bonus (5 + 50 = 55 ร— 2.0 = 110).

A deep tournament run at a continental championship can be worth more than an entire season of national wins.

2. Tournaments are high value

Placement bonuses are added once, on the deciding bout: +25 for third, +50 for runner-up, +100 for champion. They stack with the points for each round. For amateurs especially, entering the right championships is the biggest lever available.

3. Stay active

Results keep full value for 12 months, then halve, then drop to zero after 24 months. A fighter who fights once a year will always be carrying half-value results. Two to four verified bouts a year, spread out, keeps your total fresh. Check your profile's points breakdown to see when your best results will cross 12 and 24 months.

4. Finish when it is safe to

A KO or TKO adds +5 to a win: 30 instead of 25 base points. It is a real but modest bonus, 20 percent. Never take extra risk chasing it. Fighting smart and winning matters far more than the finishing bonus.

5. Get results verified quickly

Points only exist after verification. After every event:

  • Collect the official result and a contact person.
  • Submit the bout in your fighter portal within days.
  • Answer any document request from your branch promptly.

A win that sits unsubmitted is worth nothing to your ranking.

6. Choose your division carefully

Points never transfer between weight classes, categories or disciplines. Moving weight class resets your ranking in the new class to the bouts you fight there. Decide on your division with your coach and doctor, considering health first and ranking second.

7. Understand tie-breaks

If you are level on points, more verified wins ranks you higher. Then last name. In practice, the tie-break rarely matters; points do.

What does not work

  • Paying anyone: points cannot be bought and anyone offering them is misleading you.
  • Fighting at unrecognised events: bouts at events with no KBN level score zero until HQ assigns a level.
  • Padding with no-contests: they score zero by default.
  • Submitting unverifiable results: they will be rejected.

Reading your own breakdown

Open your profile's points breakdown and sort your results mentally into three groups: full value (last 12 months), half value (12 to 24 months) and expired. Then ask:

  • Which big result will halve next, and when?
  • How many points would one International Open win (37.5 for a decision, 45 for a KO/TKO) add?
  • Is there a continental championship or KBN World Cup in your calendar before your best result ages?

Frequently asked questions

QIs it better to take a hard fight at a big event or an easy one at a small event?
A

On points alone, a loss at a World Cup (12.5) is worth half a national win (25), and a win there is worth 62.5 or more. Choose fights with your coach on safety and development first.

QHow many fights a year should I aim for?
A

There is no rule, but because results halve after 12 months, regular activity across the year keeps your total up. Your health and recovery come first.

QDo finishes matter a lot?
A

A KO or TKO adds 5 base points to a win, a 20 percent increase. Event level and activity matter much more.

QCan I speed up verification?
A

Submit complete evidence with a reachable contact person. That is the single biggest factor in how quickly a result is verified.
