Fans argue about whether a stoppage was a "real" knockout. For the record and for ranking points, the definitions are practical rather than emotional. Here is what each term means and how KBN uses them.
Knockout (KO)
A knockout is when a fighter is unable to continue after a legal strike. In sports with a count, the fighter fails to rise and resume within the count (usually ten). In others, the referee waves the bout off immediately because the fighter is clearly unable to defend or continue, for example when unconscious.
Technical knockout (TKO)
A technical knockout is a stoppage where the fighter might technically be able to continue, but an official or the corner decides they should not. Common forms:
- Referee stoppage: the fighter is taking punishment and not intelligently defending.
- Standing count limits: in some rulesets, a set number of knockdowns or standing counts in a round or bout ends the fight.
- Doctor stoppage: the ringside doctor decides an injury (for example a cut) makes continuing unsafe.
- Corner retirement: the coach throws in the towel or retires the fighter between rounds.
Some organisations record specific versions, such as RSC (referee stopped contest) in amateur boxing. KBN records these as TKO.
What about disqualifications and injuries from fouls?
A disqualification for a foul is not a KO or TKO. KBN records the method as "Other". If an accidental foul ends a bout early, the result may be a no contest or a technical decision depending on the rules and the round. A no contest earns 0 points by default.
Points in the KBN ranking
| Method | Participation | Win | Finish bonus | Base points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decision | 5 | 20 | โ | 25 |
| KO | 5 | 20 | 5 | 30 |
| TKO | 5 | 20 | 5 | 30 |
| Submission (MMA only) | 5 | 20 | 5 | 30 |
| Disqualification / other | 5 | 20 | โ | 25 |
KBN deliberately treats KO and TKO the same. Distinguishing them would reward situations where a referee let a hurt fighter take more punishment; a good stoppage protects the athlete and should not cost the winner points.
Worked example
A TKO win at a Continental Championship, eight months ago: (5 + 20 + 5) ร 2.0 ร 100% = 60 points. The same TKO win 15 months ago: 30 ร 2.0 ร 50% = 30 points. After 24 months: 0 points, though the TKO stays on the verified record.
Why the method must match the official result
When you submit a bout record, choose the method the officials recorded. If the result sheet says "TKO (corner retirement)" and you choose KO, the branch will correct it or ask you to. Mismatches delay verification. The KO/TKO count shown on your public record comes only from verified bouts.
Safety first
A knockout or a heavy TKO usually brings a medical suspension. Follow it. Symptoms such as headache, confusion, dizziness, nausea or vomiting after a bout need urgent medical attention.

How methods appear on profiles
On a KBN profile, the verified record shows W-L-D with the number of KO/TKO wins. The points breakdown lists each bout's method, so you can see which wins carried the finishing bonus.
| Code | Meaning |

| KO | Knockout |
| TKO | Technical knockout (referee, doctor or corner stoppage) |
| DEC | Decision |

Myths and facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| A TKO is a "lesser" win | For ranking purposes it is worth exactly the same as a KO |
| A corner retirement is a decision | It is recorded as a TKO |
| A disqualification is a KO | It is recorded as "Other" with no finishing bonus |
| The loser of a KO gets nothing | The loser earns the 5 participation points |
Scenario: a doctor stoppage for a cut
In round two, a clash of heads opens a cut and the doctor stops the bout. If the clash was accidental, the event's rules decide whether it is a no contest or a technical decision. If the cut was caused by a legal strike, the bout is a TKO win for the athlete who landed it: 30 base points.

Frequently asked questions
QIs a TKO worth fewer points than a KO?
No. Both earn the +5 finishing bonus, so both are worth 30 base points for the winner.
QDoes the loser get anything for being stopped?
Yes, the 5 participation points, multiplied by the event level and time value, as with any loss.
QIs a doctor stoppage a TKO?
Yes. KBN records doctor stoppages as TKO.
QDoes a disqualification win count as a finish?
No. A win by disqualification earns the 25 base points for a win but no finishing bonus.
