Sponsors, partners and integrity: keeping money separate from rankings

Sponsors and partners can support events, athletes and education, and receive visibility in return, but they can never influence results, event levels, verification decisions or ranking points. KBN keeps money structurally separate from the ranking engine.

Combat sports need money: venues, officials, medical cover, travel, prize money. Sponsors and partners provide much of it. The challenge is to welcome that support without letting it touch sporting outcomes. KBN's approach is simple: money and rankings never meet.

What sponsorship can support

  • Events: venues, production, medical cover, officials' costs.
  • Athletes: equipment, travel, training camps.
  • Education: coaching courses, referee and judge training.
  • Media: broadcasts, content, the live centre.
  • Visibility: logos on event pages, sponsor slots and media where the relevant modules are enabled.

What sponsorship can never buy

The line sponsors cannot cross
Never for saleWhy
Ranking points or positionsPoints come only from verified bouts
Event levels or multipliersSet only by KBN World HQ on sporting criteria
Verification decisionsMade on evidence; audited
Licences or certificatesIssued by HQ only after verification
Officiating outcomesInfluencing officials is prohibited conduct

How the separation works

  • The ranking engine reads only verified bouts and event levels. There is no field for sponsorship, fees or membership.
  • Event levels are set by HQ; any override can only reduce a multiplier.
  • Every decision that affects points is audited.
  • Fees relate only to administration, membership or documents.

Conflicts of interest

A sponsor that also manages athletes or promotes events has potential conflicts. Declare them. Officials and committee members with sponsor relationships should step aside from decisions involving those interests.

Athlete sponsorship

Athletes can and should seek sponsors. A verified KBN ranking and certificate are strong credentials in a sponsorship pitch because they cannot be bought. Athletes should never promote prohibited substances or dangerous weight-loss products.

Reporting

Anyone offered influence over rankings in exchange for money or favours should report it to holdingkbn@gmail.com. Attempting to influence a verification, ranking or officiating decision by payment, threat or favour is prohibited under the Code of Conduct.

A partnership checklist

  • The agreement states that the partner has no influence on results, levels, verification or rankings.
  • Conflicts of interest are declared and recorded.
  • Any athlete sponsorship is disclosed.
  • Products promoted are legal, safe and compatible with anti-doping rules.
  • The partner agrees to the Code of Conduct where relevant.

Myths and facts

Sponsorship myths
MythFact
Sponsors expect influenceGood partners value a credible, independent ranking

Integrity rules scare sponsors awayThey protect the value sponsors are associated with

How to pitch a sponsor honestly

Athletes and federations often ask how to approach sponsors without over-promising. A credible pitch focuses on what is real and checkable:

  • Audience: event attendance, broadcast or stream reach, and social following, stated accurately.
  • Credentials: verified records, rankings and certificates that anyone can check on the verify page.
  • Values: clean sport, safeguarding, education and community work.
  • Deliverables: logo placement, content, appearances, hospitality, and how they will be reported.

What a pitch must never include is any suggestion that the sponsor will gain influence over results, event levels, officials or rankings. Beyond breaching KBN's rules, such promises destroy the very credibility the sponsor is paying to be associated with.

Reporting to partners

Good partnerships are measured. Agree at the start what will be reported (for example impressions, attendance, content published), and report it honestly. Never report ranking movement as a sponsorship outcome: it is not one.

A worked scenario

A regional energy-drink brand offers to sponsor a national championship and asks whether its logo can appear on the event page and whether "its" athletes can be seeded. The first request is ordinary sponsorship: logo placement, hospitality, content. The second needs care. Seeding is an organiser's decision based on sporting criteria, such as published rankings or previous results; it cannot be allocated to a sponsor's athletes. And whatever the seeding, every result on the card is scored by the same formula at the level KBN World HQ set for the event. A good sponsorship agreement says so in writing, so nobody is surprised later.
