Tournament brackets explained: seeding, byes, placements and points

Tournaments are the backbone of amateur combat sports and a big source of ranking points. Understanding the bracket helps athletes and fans work out what each bout is worth.

Single elimination

In a single-elimination bracket, each bout eliminates the loser. A bracket of 8 has quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final: the champion wins three bouts. A bracket of 16 adds a first round.

Byes

When the number of entrants is not a power of two (8, 16, 32), some athletes receive a bye into the next round. With 6 entrants in an 8-slot bracket, two athletes skip the first round. A bye is not a bout: it earns no points and does not appear on the record.

Seeding

Seeding places the strongest athletes apart so they do not meet early. Organisers may seed by previous results, rankings or draw. A published ranking such as KBN's gives organisers an objective basis for seeding.

Bronze medals

Many combat sports award two bronze medals to both losing semi-finalists, instead of a third-place bout; others hold a bronze bout. Either way, KBN adds the +25 third-place bonus once, on the bout that decided the placement: the lost semi-final, or the bronze bout if one is held.

Note how the runner-up's losing final (110) is worth more than any single win in the tournament: the placement bonus rewards reaching the final.

Why only on the deciding bout?

Adding the champion bonus to every bout would pay the same achievement several times. The KBN rule adds each placement bonus once, on the bout that decided it, so a tournament's points reflect exactly what happened.

Round-robin and other formats

Some events use pools or round-robins. Each verified bout still earns its own base points, and the placement bonus is added on the bout the Ranking Committee identifies as deciding the placement. Where formats are unusual, the Committee decides.

Reading a bracket on an event page

Bracket rounds are usually labelled R16, QF (quarter-final), SF (semi-final) and F (final). Winners move towards the centre or the right. For ranking purposes, each bout appears separately in the fighters' points breakdowns, with the placement shown on the deciding bout.

Scenario: planning a tournament weekend

An amateur enters a continental championship with an eight-athlete bracket. The coach plans recovery between rounds, weight maintenance after the first weigh-in and a simple strategy for each opponent. Whatever the outcome, each verified bout earns its own points at ×2.0.

Evidence for tournament results

Tournament results need evidence of each bout and of the final standings. The official bracket or results list, with medal positions, is the strongest evidence for placements. List each bout separately in your application, and mark the placement only on the deciding bout.
